OUR CITIES INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM
Location: Barcelona, Spain & around the world
Client: BFIS Benjamin Franklin International School
Scope: Design of an international educational co-operation program for children from different countries around the world to expand the knowledge of built environment and different cultures and their architecture and design.

OUR CITIES is an international educational co-operation program in which groups of children from different countries around the world join the same project in order to exchange their knowledge and learn about a new country and culture. They discover and explore the diversity of elements that define a city and the built environment, making it unique.

Through exploring the architecture and built environment of their own city, participants present and share their own culture with the children in different cities. This project aims to expand the knowledge of built environment and different cultures and their architecture and design.

Throughout a series of activities they learn, play and study their own city, the different scales from an urban point of view to the house they live in. How do they describe their built environment? They exercise their imagination, test out ideas, explore new possibilities; developing new ways of thinking about the world around them. The five senses play an important role on their experience to define the environment.

At the end of the workshop, the children are able to define and build their perception of the city and to exchange their experience with the other group. It’s an opportunity to describe the city that they live in and at the same time to find and know about a new one. They will be able to compare and discover similarities and differences between different cities.

The aim of the project is to promote an open exchange of cultures and mutual understanding between different countries around the world. Promote architecture education in order to enable children to fully discover and enjoy their built environment and architecture, to help to understand the impact and meaning of architecture to man and to help understand everybody’s joint responsibility of the environment. Design education helps to make the environment visible to the public, and it’s a wonderful and innovate learning tool for children.

A STORY TO INSPIRE …

In 2011 there was the tragic tsunami in Japan. My students were really affect by the episode & during 2 week we didn ́t get any information from the school in Japan. Lucky nothing happened with them but my students wanted to make somenthing, they feel deeply sorry for the cause, so by their own initiative they design a big message of support as we can see in the picture that said “we hope that you can rebuilt your city fast”

sunday
I just want it to mention this as an example of how students can feel motivate to participate when they get deeply involved in an activity. This is a wonderful example of how Architecture Education can be a wonderfull and innovate learning tool for children.
